Amputation sounds a bit extreem for a dislocated toe. There must be something about the cat's toe that I do not understand if it needed to be removed for a dislocation.

I'm not questioning the vet or you - I'm just trying to learm more.

My vet said that it is difficult to relocate a dislocated toe in cats and they frequently redislocate. Splash's was bent and rotated a full 90 degrees to the side with a small crush fracture on the proximal bone. This would indicate significant ligament damage. The joint would have to have been pinned and fused for a permanent reduction. My vet said cats don't usually do well with pinned toe joints and there is a high complication and failure rate. She said they usually heal much faster and better if the end of the toe is removed.

He is doing great. I first brought him home Tuesday (surgery was Monday) and he started tearing at his sutures and did not want to use paper litter. Ther vet said to bring him back and they kept him until yesterday so his would would get a chance to heal (no additional charge for keeping him either). He came home Yesterday and has been fine. No limp and no indication the foot is bothering him.
