I've stopeed getting the nasty generic brands for my baby boy.I started to buy Whiskas and he loves it!Meaty Selections! The dry stuff.
How good is Whiskas for him?Is it one of the better brands of comercial stuff?
I really can't afford the vet brands. |

Hello! Unfortunately, Whiskas is a horrible food. It contains mainly corn and other grains used as "fillers" - cheap ingredients that cats were not designed to extrude nutrients from - and very little meat. Although premium foods are more expensive, you'll save money in the long run as your cat will eat less of them.
A great, reasonably priced cat food is Chicken Soup - Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | Like I said, it's more expensive, but you'll save money in the long run because your cat will eat less, you'll pay less in vet bills that may result from improper nutrition, and your cat will use the litterbox less. |

Hey Catherine! Go to see you here again!
Supernanny, the better foods are NOT "vet" foods. What vets sell is mostly that very inferior, yet very overpriced Hill's products. Avoid them unless your cat has a serious medical condition and needs a special prescription food. Hills does make specialized prescription diets for medical problems.
But, your cat does not need "vet" food. Just not grocery store food. As Catherine said, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul dry food is very reasonably priced for a top level food. It costs almost the same as Iams from the grocery store, but is better than Iams.

NO! Whiskas dry is one of the worst quality foods. NO pet food sold in a grocery store is one of the better brands. Not a one. To check the ingredients of foods, go to the online store Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | They give the ingredients of foods.
Regarding Whiskas dry. Here are the first several ingredients. I highted in red what is bad. In addition to what is bad in it, it does not have good muscle meat in it. Also, by starting with corn means that corn is the largest percent of the ingredients. That is not good for cats. They need meat protein.
Ingredients Whiskas dry:
Ground Yellow Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved with BHA/BHT), Natural Poultry Flavor, Wheat Flour, Rice, Brewers Dried Yeast, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Turkey By-Product Meal, Caramel Color, Calcium Carbonate, dl-Methionine, Taurine, Trace Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Potassium Iodide), Whitefish Meal, Vitamins: (dl-Alpha Tocopheral Acetate [Source of Vitamin E], Folic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Niacin, Vitamin B12 Supplement,
If you read my sticky post in this folder, "Pet food Ingredients" Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | , you can find out what those bad ingredients are. Also read the links I gave about pet foods in that thread.
If you are tight on money and must buy grocery store food, the only acceptable dry food not counting Iams would be Purina One. Purina One is not a great food, but it is better than the other grocery store foods (except for Iams). _________________ Margaret, a/k/a Galensgranny |

I use Purina one and am starting to mix it half and half with a higher quailty food.
I only buy the chicken purina one or the turkey if the store is out of the chicken...their ingredients are better than the other flavors for some reason. |
