Maria, that was an interesting article. I had read elsewhere the thought that the melamine was intentionally added. It seems to me it had have been done on purpose for some reason.
| Quote: | | How much wet food do you guys put down for each cat's meal? Do you feed them wet twice a day? |
We feed canned food once a day, at around 5PM.
We split 6 oz. between all the 7 cats. It winds up with a bit less than one ounce each. A few of the cats would like more that that, for seconds a couple of hours later. Sometimes I will open a 3 oz. can of FF then.
We also free feed dry, so the cat are a bit full on that. Of course, if we were only feeding canned, each cat would sure need more than one oz. a day!
Yes, the cats don't really like leftovers. I really wish Fromms would make 3oz cans. _________________ Margaret, a/k/a Galensgranny |

Thanks Margaret,
I've been wondering if I should just give them wet once a day too. It is such a production for just having 2 cats! Jeremy always has his bowl in the right place, but we have to go through this ritual every time they get fed:
If I don't put Molly's down first, she will run away and hide - then Jeremy will certainly try to eat her food. But as soon as I put hers down, Jeremy heads right toward it, even though his goes down at almost the same time. I literally have to push him along right to his plate. He then checks to see if Molly is eating before he will eat - I guess he is hoping to get to hers first.
Then Molly eats about 1/2 - or less - she wanders away......Jeremy leaves whatever he has left to go and eat hers. Then he returns to his plate, sometimes he "buries" the rest for later. However, it is already dry from having the gravy sucked out of it. I've been trying to take Molly's food away when she leaves it because Jeremy really has to stay on his diet.
Feeding wet canned food once a day will really help when we have the petsitter because this ritual takes forever. Even though the petsitter stays for about 1/2 hour and plays with them a bit, the ritual can go on for more than an hour so either Jeremy ends up eating too much and Molly not enough - or Molly's food gets thrown out.
I'm trying to keep Jeremy on his diet, but it's hard when I'm away or out of the house because I'm always afraid Molly won't get enough to eat. It's not a problem when I'm here.

I feed one 5.5 oz can per day - around 5:00 p.m. or so unless they are positively passing out from starvation , at which point I will feed them earlier if I am home like at 4:30 or so.
I split the 5.5 ounce can 4 ways and that's all they get. Certain foods they inhale, while others they take their time with and I end up throwing out about half the can....
I've started to give the dogs half of what's left over after the cats are finished.... just as a "treat" sort of cause it's really not alot.... I take two bowls with equal amounts of leftovers and give them to the dogs then take the two remaining bowls and combine them into one bowl and put it up on the table where the cats have their dry food 24/7. Muffin will usually be the first to get to the food there then Peaches and sometimes Milo. Sparky seems to prefer dry food. _________________ Michelle |

I have two feeding arrangements at my house: one for Evan and one for the rest of the guys (Ranger, Dusty, Pippin, and Little Bit).
I feed wet food twice a day: 7:00 a.m. and about 5: 30 p.m. For the “gang of four”, I split a 5.5 ounce can of wet food four ways. To Ranger’s food, I add his Restor-A (glucosamine and chondroitin). It has a seafood taste (derived from oysters, I understand), and Ranger eats it without any problems.
I supplement the wet feedings with a bit of dry food – Eagle Pack Holistic Select Chicken. Now, I’m only giving about a tablespoon each.
Evan gets his special food mixture. However, in the past few weeks, he has expressed a much greater interest in the dry food. Also, yesterday, I served Wellness Chicken and Herring to the gang of four. Pippin would not eat his, so I gave it to Evan. He liked it and presented me with a very clean plate!
Maria: And I though Evan was difficult to feed, at a time. Your guys take the cake!

Well, just what I was afraid of happened.
Both Jeremy & Molly sniffed the Fromm's shredded chicken and walked away. I tried putting some on their mouth (that sometimes works), but they would have no part of the chicken.......or the beef.
They did eat the tuna last night - and again this morning ( I also added some canned "human" tuna to it). I'll keep an eye on Jeremy, but as of now he has no bumps......I never found out exactly what he was allergic to, but have been careful about not giving him some foods. I've given him a very little bit of fish now & then - it was one food I thought he might be allergic to. However, he is doing okay.
Today I went to Pet Goods (my favorite store). It is a huge store, and a relatively new chain (approx 2 years), and they only have a total of 3 stores, but their prices are so much lower than Petco - and lower than Petsmart.
I was so happy to see that they are beginning to fill the empty spaces in the store - spaces where the recalled foods were. Today they had 3 cat brands they never had before, both canned and dry - Prairie and Felidae and another I've never heard of......something like Weruva (there's a picture of the shadow of 3 cats on the can).
I purchased 5 different flavors of Prairie - all meats in gravy (no wheat gluten). They are expensive, but I'm hoping slowly begin to feed them only wet once a day. I'll feed them in the morning since they always wake me up in the morning, letting me know they're waiting for their wet food. I think I can get away with just dry in the evening, although I see Molly is following me around now......hmmmmmm.....
Oh well, I just caved. They got their Fromm's tuna tonight. Not sure I can do this now.

It can take some cats a day or two to decide that a new food is something they will deign to eat. But it sounds like Molly and Jeremy simply do not want to bother with the Fromms chicken. Funny, all 7 of my cats love it.
Maybe West Virginian cats like chicken better than NJ cats. _________________ Margaret, a/k/a Galensgranny |

I'm glad your Pet Goods store is finally starting to fill their shelves with more food.... that must be reassuring. I've heard of both Felidae and Prairie as they sell them on line at Petfooddirect where I get all my canned foods..... they are supposed to be more along the lines of "people food" than many of the other foods (like the ones recalled). More healthy for them....
I hope Molly and Jeremy will like the new foods for you. _________________ Michelle |
