URGENT!

Not yet on the recall list, but found to be tainted with melamine are:

Nutro 3 oz. cans of Lamb & Turkey Cutlets, California Chicken Supreme and Chicken Cacciatore.

The canned cat food that tested positive for melamine at UC Davis were the Lamb & Turkey Cutlets, California Chicken Supreme and Chicken Cacciatore. ....

Mill Valley Pet Clinic officials ordered the food sample test for Cleo, an 11-year-old domestic short-hair cat brought to their office last month after she stopped eating. She was rushed to the Pet Emergency and Specialty Center of Marin in San Rafael.

Kellie Little, Cleo's owner, said she purchased the food from Pet Club in Corte Madera on March 19. She said she has been in contact with Nutro officials about six times over the past two weeks, but she was told that only the cat food in pouches had been recalled, not the canned cat food. She provided two samples to the company's office in addition to the samples sent to UC Davis.

Little's cat has slowly recovered under constant veterinary care, and she brought Cleo home Monday.

Everyone, even if a particular flavor or style of cat food from a company with recalled products is not on the official list, don't use their other products for now. More food is found to be poisoned as the days and weeks go by.

Avoid all food with wheat gluten for now.

Thanks for the "heads up" Margaret.

I'm glad that little Cleo is going to be ok....

She was trying to decide if she should feed the Nutro lamb in cans. I hope she had decided not to.

BREAKING NEWS: Menu Foods Expands Recall — Again
April 10th, 2007

Menu Foods transfered some of the tainted wheat gluten to their
Canadian facility and has issued yet another recall.

Menu Foods has identified a single interplant transfer of the
ChemNutra supplied wheat gluten, shipped from Menu Foods’ plant in
Emporia, Kansas, to its plant in Streetsville, Ontario. This wheat gluten was
subsequently used in the production of pet food in December, 2006 and
January, 2007, which is being recalled by Menu Foods.

This may explain the melamine found in Nutro’s cans in California.
Thank goodness for pet parents who care. You were right to suspect all
Menu Foods products.

The revised recall includes cat food brands from Nutro, Publix,
America’s Choice, Pet Pride, Winn Dixie and more.

This is awful!

In January, right after Ranger had his blockage, the vet prescribed Royal Canin wet - which was part of the pet food recall issued today!

I'm so glad that Ranger would not eat it and I sent it all back to the vet! I will have to call them tomorrow and let them know about the expended recall. I don't know if they still have the food in stock or not.

I am so glad Ranger would not eat that Royal Canin food! I think we should "listen" to our pets and if they flat out won't eat something, don't try to make them. Though, Ranger may have just been being picky.

This is getting to be more than horrific.

I typed out a long post about 2-3 hours ago explaining the whole thing......then got booted off the forum and the post disappeared.

Yes, I've been feeding Molly and Jeremy Nutro and I'm very upset about this, very upset.

Last night I had a problem installing the virus scan update, so had to get another CD today.......and finally it's working. I was on the forum a day or so ago, but when I read about a possible virus problem, I didn't post or come back until today after I got it installed. Thank goodness Mark and Mitchell emailed me about the food.

When the recalls came out, I stopped using the Nutro Lamb & Turkey and I switched to Fancy Feast Grilled chicken with gravy as Molly and Jeremy wouldn't eat anything else I tried. However, after a few weeks, and 2 phone calls to Nutro who gave me the thumbs up on the Nutro Gourmet, I decided to go back to it. Obviously I'm very sorry I made that decision; however, I trusted Nutro when they said this was not made in the same plant as the contaminated food. I should have followed my instincts and taken it back. I actually had to take it out of the car because I had packed all the cans (1-1/2 cases) to return. I thought it would be safe to feed.

If there is any good news here, it is the fact that Molly and Jeremy haven't been eating much of it. Molly was leaving most of it on her plate, and Jeremy left about 1/4 of his (but he did manage to drain all the gravy off). My petsitter took care of them last week as I was on retreat, and she gave me a full description of their input/output every day by phone.

I had just changed back to FF this morning because they both left the Nutro sitting in their bowls.

When I read Mark's email - then Michelle's - I went into the Nutro website (after reading the link on the emails). It stated "there will be an updated press release today" but there was nothing else there at the time (haven't checked it in the last few hours).

Molly and Jeremy have been acting normal. However, I called the vet's office and left a message (they had closed). I told them about the recall and said I would like Jeremy and Molly to have the necessary bloodwork to assure they are okay.

I called Petgoods where I buy most of their food. Interestingly, they had pulled the Nutro off the shelves this morning as they already had the news - even though it wasn't on the Nutro website yet. Someone notified them.

Does anyone here know what blood tests they will need? Any other tests? I want them to get what they need to assure they are okay; however, my experience with this vet is that sometimes (IMO) he overdoes the tests - and I do wonder if it is to make more money. I would like to go into this informed.

One last question - Obviously, I would never give them another morsel of the Nutro - nor any Nutro product right now. I don't want to give them anything with wheat gluten in it either. However........for tomorrow morning, I have no wet food except FF chicken with gravy (and wheat gluten). Do you think I shouldn't give them any wet until I can get to the store - or should I just give them 1/2 can of the FF?

I'm really upset - confused - and angry......so am not thinking rationally yet. This is such a terrible terrible situation........I wish I had listened to my original instinct - and left the nutro in the car to be returned.......

I've already tried almost every good food available around here. I'm going to call some more pet stores to see if I can find some Fromm's. I was planning on doing this anyway when I got back from retreat. My two are absolutely stubborn about eating new foods - and they turn down 99% of anything I give them. Thankfully at least they will eat the dry, so at least they won't starve until I can find something they will eat. And they have always liked water. Hopefully I'll find something soon.

Any advice, information, help would be appreciated.

Maria

Maria, for sure you are confused and angry.

The melamine is causing kidney damage to the cats, so the cats will need all the kidney values checked. Personally, I would not just have the BUN and Creatinine tested. I would get the full chemistry profile done.

I would also have the full hemotolgy testing done, to check the red and white blood cells.

I feel that the Fancy Feast is safe. FF is not at all made by menu foods.

Merrick is a good choice to use also for canned.

You can order Fromm's from Petfooddirect.com, but it will take several days to arrive.
