Maria, for sure you are confused and angry.

The melamine is causing kidney damage to the cats, so the cats will need all the kidney values checked. Personally, I would not just have the BUN and Creatinine tested. I would get the full chemistry profile done.

I would also have the full hemotolgy testing done, to check the red and white blood cells.

I feel that the Fancy Feast is safe. FF is not at all made by menu foods.

Merrick is a good choice to use also for canned.

You can order Fromm's from Petfooddirect.com, but it will take several days to arrive.

Thanks Margaret,

I've tried most of the Merrick cat food wet - for some reason they don't like it, probably because it doesn't have as much of that gravy that they love.

If I remember correctly, there are a couple places in NJ that sell Fromm's, but I forgot where. Tomorrow I will search the Fromm's website - that's where I found some stores before, but I didn't have time to check them out.

I will get all the tests done. What a nightmare.

URGENT!

Not yet on the recall list, but found to be tainted with melamine are:

Nutro 3 oz. cans of Lamb & Turkey Cutlets, California Chicken Supreme and Chicken Cacciatore.

The canned cat food that tested positive for melamine at UC Davis were the Lamb & Turkey Cutlets, California Chicken Supreme and Chicken Cacciatore. ....

Mill Valley Pet Clinic officials ordered the food sample test for Cleo, an 11-year-old domestic short-hair cat brought to their office last month after she stopped eating. She was rushed to the Pet Emergency and Specialty Center of Marin in San Rafael.

Kellie Little, Cleo's owner, said she purchased the food from Pet Club in Corte Madera on March 19. She said she has been in contact with Nutro officials about six times over the past two weeks, but she was told that only the cat food in pouches had been recalled, not the canned cat food. She provided two samples to the company's office in addition to the samples sent to UC Davis.

Little's cat has slowly recovered under constant veterinary care, and she brought Cleo home Monday.

Everyone, even if a particular flavor or style of cat food from a company with recalled products is not on the official list, don't use their other products for now. More food is found to be poisoned as the days and weeks go by.

Avoid all food with wheat gluten for now.

Margaret,

My confusion - to be specific is about wheat gluten - due to all that is being said/published about wheat gluten. As in your post above, you said to avoid all food with wheat gluten. That's why I hesitated to give Molly and Jeremy FF - because the chicken with gravy has WG has the 3rd ingredient.

Also - I've read - more than once - that some brands that are not made by Menufoods buy the wheat gluten from the same place as menu foods.

Oh, yeah, that is true.

My cats don't like all the Merrick flavors, but they do like Grammy's Pot Pie and Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Those have some gravy. But I add a little water to thin it out to make more gravy. Not too much water.

It is worth you getting a can of each of those to try on your cats again. Take up all dry food for five or 6 hours before serving the wet food, so that the cats will not be full on any dry food.

I found a petstore that sells Fromm's and they have the shredded chicken so I'm leaving shortly to purchase a few cans.

And yes, I will not leave any food out after "lunch" today. Then we'll see! Sometimes if Molly turns her nose up at a food, I will put some of the gravy on her mouth - and after she licks it off, she will sometimes turn back and eat the food.

All of my cats love the Fromms shredded chicken. They don't eat every bit at the first round, but then 3 or 4 of them come back after an hour to finish off the rest. The bowls get licked clean! No other wet food we served was such a hit!

It seems that most well fed cats can't really fit more than one ounce of food in their tummys at one moment, and need about an hour to get more room in their tummies to eat more.

Maria - did you say (sometime in the past) that Molly and Jeremy will not eat pate style foods???? I can't remember. If they WILL eat pate style foods, I will send you (I think I might have your new address at home in my phone book) 6 cans of food that ARE COMPLETELY SAFE (Wellness and Precise brands) to "hold you over until you find something else for them. (I have 6 different flavors so that's why there would be 6 cans). I can get them out tomorrow ( Thursday). Would that be of some help?????

Oh.... do me a favor and e-mail me your address today just in case I don't have it - then I can prepare the package today when I get home from work for you and won't have to muddle around looking for stuff in the morning when I will have to leave for an appointment.

I do hope Molly and Jeremy will be ok..... I'll say some prayers and keep my fingers crossed for you and for them. Boy....what a nightmare!!!!!!!

How much wet food do you guys put down for each cat's meal? Do you feed them wet twice a day? I usually divide the 3 oz can with my two. However, Jeremy eats all but a small portion as soon as I put it down. Molly eats about 1/2 of it - then wanders around. Jeremy waits for this moment - he leaves his little leftover portion, hurries over to her dish and fishes it. Then he saves his little leftover for himself later. I try to be there when Molly leaves her plate and take it away to give it to her later, but this doesn't always work because I sometimes leave before she is ready to eat the rest and Jeremy is waiting for that 2nd portion to arrive.

Today I got 2 cans of the Fromm's shredded chicken, one can of chicken and tuna with gravy and one of beef because they both will usually at least try the beef - so just in case they won't eat the other......I'm pretty well covered. Hopefully!

Here is an update on the investigation of how the melamine got into the wheat gluten......it hasn't even been made public in China because it's "negative news" - guess they are only positive thinkers there. Rolling Eyes

From the 2nd article:

Quote:
Dr. Richard Goldstein, associate professor of medicine at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine and a kidney specialist who is researching the outbreak's health impact on pets, said he and other researchers saw what they believe is a second contaminant in the gluten and the urine of infected animals, but have yet to identify it. Cornell is among labs working with the FDA.

Michelle,

I feel pretty good now. Molly and Jeremy seem to be doing okay, and after speaking with someone at the vet's office who has been working directly with the vet on these issues, I feel much better. She told me that typically the cat who has eaten tainted food would exhibit some symptoms.......vomiting and diarrhea.......lethargy, etc. Even though my two are great - and playing - with no symptoms, I'm still getting the blood work done, but I feel much better about it.

Thanks so much for thinking of sending me some food Michelle. However, neither of mine will eat pate' unfortunately. I think they share the same taste buds. Evil or Very Mad

I found some Fromm's - and as I posted above, I got 4 cans, 2 of the shredded chicken, one tuna in gravy and one beef (they used to love beef and usually will try any beef I've gotten them, even if they will only eat it once.

I'm hoping to find something a little less expensive, or find another food that I can give them along with the Fromm's. The cans were $1.69 each - of course that's for their 6.3 oz cans - they don't have the smaller ones.

The other battle I have is getting them to eat leftovers.......believe it or not, they normally turn their nose up at leftovers. But I'm going to give it to them. I'm certainly not going to pay that price for one meal each. I heat it slightly - I tried adding water, but they know it's watered down and won't eat it that way. However, as Margaret suggested, I'll make sure they are hungry when they eat. This is a good time to stop leaving food out for them. I have to watch though because Jeremy tends to eat Molly's food because she likes to graze during the day.....and he tries to eat whatever is around.

I'll email you my address........for the future.......thanks again for the offer of the pate'

Molly and Jeremy go for their blood tests at 2:00 tomorrow.
