Jolie had normal weight cat shape forever, with nothing sticking out or being sunk in. Just a slight "waistline". The day before yesterday, I thought she was looking slimmer. Yesterday I got a good look at her shape from overhead while she was walking, and she is sunken in from her rib area to her tail area, like an underweight cat! Shocked She still has some saggy "udders", as often occurs with spayed cats, but it seems to be mostly loose skin.

I am so worried. I can still feel some flesh over ribs, so she has not gotten to the skin and bones state that Galen had before his CRF was diagnosed and treated. With Galen, I didn't notice at first since he is so furry.

We are calling the vet tomorrow and hope we can get Jolie in for blood testing ASAP. I hope she does not have kidney problems, or hyperthyroidism, or anything else that is not easily treated and cured.

She hasn't been eating the canned food the past two days (Fancy Feast). But, she will eat hard treats, and even dances around us begging. She did that this morning. So I don't think it is a tooth/gum problem making it hurt for her to eat. I don't know how much or how little dry food she has been eating, but I haven't seen her eat any the past two days. That doesn't mean she didn't.

Oh, worry, worry. Sad

Sorry to hear about Jolie, that is a concern. How old is she? I hope the blood work comes back normal. Keep us updated.

Why is it that spayed cats get that saggy flap of skin?

Jolie is 7 years old. I hope maybe she just hasn't been eating much due to stress, since that will go away sooner or later, unlike some other possibilities.

We integrated two new cats in with the rest in December, then Simon died in the house in the beginning of February, and we recently had stray tom cat Frankie in the house. So maybe that was the last nerve getting stepped on for Jolie. All that was stressful for me, so I am sure it was for the cats too.

On top of that, for the cats making even more stress, is the reorganizing of their heirarchy with the two new additions, and then the one loss. Simon was the top cat, and Seamus the contestant for that spot. Seamus has been pestering the others a bit more than he had been.

Galen has been overgrooming, making his belly and inside of his thighs bald. The fur is growing back now. I think he was stress grooming. Or maybe reacting to flea bites, or more probably both.

I guess some of the spayed cats get that saggy flap due to the innards that used to be inside and connected no longer being there. Jolie didn't have the saggy flap when she was younger. So normal aging where skin looses it's elasticity is probably what happens too. Like with humans aging, anything that can sag, will! Confused

Oh, I am sorry to hear that. Chuckie lost a whole lot of weight really fast as well,so, please make sure to get her blood sugar tested as well.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it is nothing serious.

Margaret,

I'm sorry to hear about Jolie's weight loss. I hope it's stress or just getting older. I will pray for her........and for you and all the family. You certainly don't need any more situations and/or concerns with any of your kitties.

Please keep us updated as soon as you know. And I hope you see Jolie eating........soon!

Maria

Oh Margaret - I do hope she'll be ok and that it's just stress that has been causing the weight loss.... on an aside, I spoke to my former neighbor in Floriday last night and her cat (Shadow) has lost 3 lbs and she didn't think it was a problem.... he had been 16 lbs for the last 5 years or so.....anyway, I told her that she needs to get bloodwork done on him as soon as possible too because a 3 lb weight loss is NOT good even if it's "over time" like she said.... I KNOW Shadow and he's a big boy like my Milo and 3 lbs is still a lot. (His hair is also thinning and he has bald spots where he might be pulling it out but the thinning hair and weight loss has me worried) I think I might have scared her (that was not my intent though) and I hope she takes him soon.... I am worried about him and now Jolie too!!!!! Shocked

Have you got a date to take Jolie in now????

Hi Margaret:

I hope there is nothing seriously wrong with Jolie. When will you be able to get her into the vet and have the results of the tests?

Do you have a scale at home to weigh your cats?

I ask this because I have found it hard to feel the weigh variations in my cats. For example, with Evan, I did not catch his weight loss last year, at the onset of his Hyper-T. During the course of the past year, his weight has varied anywhere from just under 6 lbs to his current weight of 9 lbs. There have been times that I though he was gaining weight, only to weigh him and find out that he had lost weight and visa versa.

The scale has been the only way I could keep an accurate track of his weight.

On an aside – Jane’s cat, Shadow, is back from the vet. They were not able to get a urine sample, but the vet said that simple stress could, and often does, cause UTI’s and other problems in cats (this was Jane telling me what the vet told her. I think all of us here already knew this). So, Shadow is also on antibiotics.

Mark

Jolie goes to the vet tomorrow at 2:30.

We don't have a pet scale, but I know she lost weight because now she looks concave, whereas last week, she was "straight" (meaning if you looked at her, her sides were like straight lines- nothing sticking out or sunken in.) She is a short haired, not very thick furred cat, so it is easier to see her body. With Galen, I didn't notice except for by feeling him, and was horrified to feel that he was skin and bones!

Jolie again ate the Whiskas Temptations treats a little while ago. But, she will only eat them in one certain spot in the computer room (supposed to be formal dining room). So there does seem to be a territorial component in place, as if she does not feel "right" about eating the treats elsewhere.

Thanks for the good wishes.

Late this afternoon, Jolie ate treats anywhere they were, as long as Seamus wasn't in sight. Perhaps Seamus' efforts to become top cat have her eating "a little off" and this will go away. Maybe the vet visit can also shed some light. Of course, as Margaret said, we have had some stressful months for us and the cats.

It's good that she's eating treats..... I hope the vet visit doesn't turn up anything serious and I hope she starts putting weight on again.
