I just received an email from PetSmart saying their records show I had purchased a can of the recalled pet food.

I usually buy Friskies (mainly for financial reasons and the prime filets is just about the only food Spyder will eat.

But lately I have been trying a few other brands of wet food and tried the Authority brand. I had only purchased 6 cans of the ground food but one turned out to be the chunks, so I'm assuming it's that...it was just one can and I split it between 3 of the kitties. I don't think they ate very much of it because they don't like the wet food with chunks...this was about 5 weeks ago and all of the kitties seem fine but I am a bit nervous now and I don't have money for blood test if they seem fine..I just had big vet bill over the last month from Rosie (my rat who passed away last Friday).

Any thoughts? Do you think they are ok a month after eating it and it only being the one can? Sad

Dianne;

I would call you vet and ask for his or her opinion.

From what I have read, some vets will recommend blood tests. Others may not request blood work, unless there are other signs or symptoms of problems.

Your vet will be in the best position to give you good advise.

Diane, do ask your vet his opinion. I think that if they don't show any symptoms, and it was only one can split between the three cats, they aren't going to die. However, they would have gotten some of the toxin in them and it is possible it caused some problem with their kidneys.

Kidney failure is what is said to occur from cats eating the tainted food, so I recommend reading about the early signs of kidney problems and then watching your cats very, very carefully.

I have a write up on chronic kidney failure in cats on my website, with links to some good articles that go into detail at

However, the situation with the tainted foods would be considered Acute renal failure, since it is caused suddenly due to a toxin. So look up Acute renal failure also. The symptoms of kidneys not working are the same, though, whether it is due to an acute event, or built up slowly over time.

Diane - I would also advise you to check with your vet on how to proceed and ask him/her what signs to look for as well as reading the articles that Margaret suggested.

Keep in mind that if you DO find signs.... I am pretty sure that the article Mark (?) posted in the other thread about he recall states that Menu Foods will pay for vet expenses if they are proven to be related to the recall or something similar. I didn't read it completely as I do not feed any of the foods but I think I saw that in there while glancing over it.

I doubt that your cats would have a problem at this point since you only fed them one can and split it three ways and it's been several weeks now.... you would have noticed something before now I would think.... but that's just my opinion. DO check with your vet to be sure adn best of luck with this. Let us know what the vet says and what you find out. I hope your crew will be okay.

Thanks for the replies all! The cats all still seem fine, I know that doesn't really mean everything is ok though, especially after what happened with Chuckie last summer.

Margaret,I will check into the link you provided, thanks.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with any of your replies but now I am more confused than ever, I just received another email from petsmart

Quote:
Dear PetSmart customer: We recently sent you an email indicating that our PetPerks transaction history shows that you purchased one of the items that was part of the Menu Foods recall. While the recall affected canned and pouched wet dog and cat food manufactured only between December 2006-March 2007, out of abundance of caution and in an effort to ensure we contacted everyone that may have purchased these items from PetSmart or other retailers, we ran the purchase history of our PetPerks members for the past 12 months.

They are not just contacting people who bought the bad lot numbers but everyone who has purchased those brands of food within the last year. So I still don't know for sure if they ate the bad food.

I'll contact the vet Monday and see what they think.

Thanks again. abbraccio
