Petgoods advised me today when I went shopping that they were told to take Alpo meats in gravy off the shelves......
I found the news release regarding Purina recalling Alpo dog - meats and gravy......

The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities," the Nestle statement added.
The dog food being recalled involves 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce Alpo Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can Alpo Prime Cuts Variety Packs with four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons, the company said. |
And why the cats are more sensitive (vs dogs)

That was good article, Maria. A point for all to keep in mind from the article is:
| Quote: | | "Cats are very sensitive to many different chemicals, whether drugs, pesticides or plants. We certainly know they have some unique physiological responses that make them susceptible in cases where we wouldn't expect it in other species," Hansen said. |

The news on the recall keeps on getting worse.
Menou Foods is expanding the recall and a brand of dog biscuts has been added to the recall.

| Quote: | (CNN) -- The Food and Drug Administration announced on Thursday it has identified additional contaminated pet food products -- dog biscuits made by Sunshine Mills of Red Bay, Alabama.
The dog biscuits are contaminated with potentially toxic wheat gluten, said Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. He said more details on which products are affected would be available later Thursday.
Sunshine Mills did not immediately return calls from CNN seeking comment.
The FDA also said Menu Foods is expanding its recall of a wide variety of products by widening the range of manufacturing dates in the recall. The company said it will announce the new recall dates later Thursday.
Menu Foods recalled 60 million cans of wet pet food on March 16 after the chemical melamine, which can be toxic in high doses, showed up in federal testing of some of its cat and dog food varieties. (Details on recall)
Since then, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, Del Monte Pet Products and Hill's Pet Nutrition have also recalled some products. |

This is horrifying now. I suggest everyone stop using foods with wheat gluten. _________________ Margaret, a/k/a Galensgranny |

Is "Wheat Flour" the same as "wheat gluten"? I see "wheat flour" in the stuff I have for the cats.
I went to Price chopper yesterday and noticed they took all the Pounce treats off the shelves except the seafood flavor in a pouch.... so I came home and threw away my "bottle" of seafood treats (Pounce is a favorite here) just to be on the safe side. I think only the chicken was affected but I didn't want to take any chances. I had given them some Pounce treats two days in a row before I knew Pounce was recalling. Thankfully, I'm not seeing any problems with the cats..... _________________ Michelle |

Gee, I guess I'll change my mind about giving Molly the Nutro Max Gourmet since she isn't eating the Fancy Feast Grill.
I'm going to try to go the no wheat gluten route also, which means I have to wean Jeremy off the FF which he likes.
ALSO..........just about every treat I've seen has wheat gluten in it. They've been eating "Whiskas Temptations" for a couple of years now - they absolutely love it. They don't like Greenies......what else is there?

Michelle, wheat flour is different from wheat gluten.
Maria, what else is there as a treat!?! Galen can't believe you don't know about those Halo Freeze dried chicken treats that Galen became addicted to. See: Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
Then, there are bonito flakes (shaved tuna), sold overpriced for cats as Kitty Kaviar. People eat them in soup (not me!) so you can get them cheaper when sold for humans. They are an Oriental thing so you might need to look in the oriental foods section. I ordered them online from Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | . Seamus went crazy over them! My other cats loved them greatly too, but Seamus really went crazy for them!
Bits of deli turkey meat is a great treat too. _________________ Margaret, a/k/a Galensgranny |

Gee... those real meat food toppers look pretty good.
I just found (at the grocery store) Whiskas Temptations Dentabites. They are crunchy on the outside (with chloropyll so they are green like grass) and soft inside. I bought the tartar control ones because everybody (except Muffin now) needs a dental cleaning. They like them and I do not see any Wheat gluten in them.... I think they cost about $1.69 for a pouch of them.
FREE SAMPLE OF NEW FOOD: Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | (only comes in fish flavors)
Buy the Temptations Treats here or just see them so you know what to look for in your local market: [url]http://www.amazon.com/Whiskas-Temptations-Treats-Seafood-Medley/dp/B0006348I6
