What is the most disgusting, nauseating, horrible smell in the world? Heated up cat urine!
Jim was starting dinner the other day, and set something to cook on one of the burners on the stove. A few minutes later, the house was full of the most horrible smell ever! Going into the kitchen made me about to vomit, for real, it was that bad. I can't describe just how disgustingly bad the smell was. I know Mark has an idea, after urinated on clothing got put in the dryer at his house, before having been washed.
It turns out one of the cats had urinated on the burner, and it went down into the drip pan under the burner.
I have some Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer air freshener. Well, it works fast! It really did help 90% to get that horrible smell out of the air within seconds! It really does neutralize odors, rather than simply add a smell to the air.
We think maybe Minerva got trapped on the counter by Seamus. He goes after her a lot. So maybe he was lying on the floor in the kitchen, to where she didn't risk getting off the counter, and finally had to urinate, so picked the place she felt was best- the stove burner.
We won't be putting a litter box on the kitchen counter, but we will make sure to never run out of that Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer air freshener! I would be willing to tell my story on tv in a commercial for them. Maybe I should write to them my "testimonial". Perhaps they would send me a free bottle of it! _________________ Margaret, a/k/a Galensgranny |

Oh no! Minerva just peed on that same burner again! Jim was sitting at the table in the kitchen and saw her. Well, at least she seems to be using that one same burner. I will try to avoid using it when I don't have time to wash it first before cooking, just in case!
It must be that Seamus bothered her too many times while she was using one of the litter boxes. I have seen him go after her a few time when she was in the litter box.
There is a place in the dining part of the kitchen where we can put a litter box. It is not near the table, so won't be too bad. That may help, at least when we are in that area, as Minerva may feel more confident that we will keep Seamus from her.
Losing the one area of the house to Frankie likely has compounded the problem, as that makes one litter box unaccessible to the other cats.
We need to find homes for some of these cats: Snookums, Frankie, and probably Clementine. Maybe Seamus instead of Clementine. But Seamus and Jim are very bonded. Clementine is no problem, but we have too many cats, and the more cats, the more stress some of the cats wind up with. _________________ Margaret, a/k/a Galensgranny |

Margaret - I feel bad for you and Jim having to put up with such a horrible smell but I have to say that I feel worse for poor Minerva. She has to know in her beautiful little head that what she's doing is wrong but she's also tormented by not being able to go to use a box as she wants. I hope you get this all straightened out soon for the poor girl - and for you guys. Best of luck with that and with rehoming the kitty's you choose to rehome. _________________ Michelle |

That honestly has to be the most random worst smell story ever, but probably not for this forum I suppose.
I feel bad that your household has had to endure such a stench. I can only imagine! _________________

Margaret:
This is awful! Do you think the problem is due to overcrowding?
One think that may help: I seem to remember a story about a cat that jumped on a stove and burned his /her paws. For some reason, I think it was Michelle’s kitty Peaches.
If it was Michelle, I think she purchased some type of burner cover to place over the coils. This may help – at least it would prevent the litter from dripping down into the burner assembly.

Mark! Thanks for saying that! I forget about those burner covers We will do that, since it is not so easy to fully clean down in the burner assembly.
I don't think the problem is so much due to overcrowding as much as it is who is part of the crowd- Seamus. He torments Minerva a lot, chasing under furniture and then sticking his nose under, while poking at her, like he is "stuffing" her under there. Then he sits in front of where he chased her, trapping her. It really is no good.
I keep putting him in time out for doing it, but is doesn't stop him from doing it. He would really need to be put in time out when he is about to do it, so the timeout would server to deter him when he gets the thought. I try to do that when I see him about to go after Minerva, but sometimes I don't know about it until he is doing it already. He is not as smart as Simon was, to make the connection as to why he was put in timeout. Seamus does not seem to understand that it was what had done moments before, not what he is doing the second I pick him up and put in timeout.
Overcrowding does come into play, however, in that Snookums has taken over Minerva's former safety spot which is the towel shelf in the laundry room, over the dryer. Snookums basically lives up there, as she is upset to be around other cats- in particular Seamus. So Minerva has lost out on a spot to try to keep away from Seamus. Too bad Minerva and Snookums aren't friends that can share spots and maybe gang up together on Seamus when he starts bothering one of them! One could be the lookout while the other uses the litter box. _________________ Margaret, a/k/a Galensgranny |

Margaret,
I hope you got rid of all the odor by this time. Yikes! what an awful shock to have the house filled with hot urine. Burner covers might just do the trick.....I'm sorry about Seamus giving Minerva such a hard time.
You do have a lot of stress to deal with at the moment. I'll pray you make the right decision about who to rehome. It has to be very difficult to make this decision, especially after Simon's recent death. I can understand why you don't want to rehome Seamus since he is attached to Jim.

Yes Mark - you are right. It was Peaches who burned all four paws (though not badly according to the vet) by jumping on the stove while it was hot. I did not buy burner covers however as I have the flat top glass stove - so I just keep putting cold pots of water on any area that is still hot from cooking. That seems to have solved our problem. _________________ Michelle |

Michelle:
I also have a glass pannel stove. I do the same - whenever I finish cooking I put a pot of water on the burner until it cools down.
