Clementine, new youngest cat, went into heat three days ago. She is not being as loud and insistent as Minerva was, and is not doing the writhing on the floor thing. So, we can wait until her spay appointment on Jan. 29. I hope. She should be winding down soon. I hope it doesn't escalate first! So far, she seems quiet when we are sleeping, or else she goes out in the enclosure to do her calling where we can't hear her.

She is so small, it would really have been very bad if we hadn't rescued her from the wooded area in Alabama behind my inlaws' house. She would be mated and pregnant by now. Sad

I'm not sure how well she would have done being pregnant with seemingly no home and no good food source- and with the cold weather (though it doesn't get as cold in Northern AL as in WV or further northern US). She is totally tame and was so used to litterboxes and things in a house, so I don't believe she was living outside as a kitten with a hunting mother to teach her to hunt for survival.

When Minerva went into heat, no way could we live with a week of it, so after the first day, I was on the phone to find a vet who could do her surgery the next day. Luckily, I found one.

Hi Margaret:

Oh, this does not sound like fun at all.

When I took Dusty in for her spay, the vet’s said she was in heat. The only clue I had was that she was always raising her rear end up. All of my fixed boys were ignoring her.

I hope she is quite for her cycle. I also hope that she does not draw in unfixed neighborhood toms to your house.

Clementine is very lucky indeed to have landed into your household!

This makes me wonder how soon Kilalah will start going into heat. Her final set of shots for hitting the 12 week mark is coming up in a week or two.

Boy, that Clemintine sure is lucky that you and Jim took her in!!!! Best of luck to you waiting till the 29th. I hope she's as quiet as a kitty possibly can be for you during her heat.

Tha average age a female cat comes into her first is around 6 months. Some a bit sooner, and some later.

Minerva went into heat at around 5- 5 1/2 months. Of course, we don't know exactly how old she is, as she was found in a box on someone's porch as a young kitten.

I would have Kilalah spayed at 5 months. Most vets hold to waiting until 6 months, though. So at least make the appointment when Kilalah is 5 month, 5 1/2 months. Most vets don't do routine surgeries every day, so often when you call, you can't get an appointment for a spay that same week or even the next week. The soonest my vet could take Clemmie is Jan. 29.

Clemmie seems to be coming out of heat. I haven't heard her do her calling all day so far. Just now, she was playing chase with Sumner and Seamus. Hmmm. Though, maybe that is a new tactic she is trying to get a man! Not that they will be of much use to her. Laughing

Yes, her heat is over! Very Happy

In a week from now, it will never have a chance to happen again!

Seamus was getting a little nervous about her, as she would constantly make that purrrt, purrt, "Hey let's play" noise to him a LOT and insistantly, then follow him around. He is used to all the cats running from him due to his pesky back jumping days and current general pestering ways. So he leaves her alone, and just bothers Minerva.

Seamus got to "relax" in jail this morning for a while, due to really bothering Minerva a lot. He even wound up with a scratch on his nose after he was trying to get at her when she was under the bed. It didn't stop him from keeping it up, though. Evil or Very Mad

I wish his nose was more sensitive so it would deter him from trying to get Minerva when she is under the bed trying to escape from him. I am glad Minerva did swipe at him, though, instead of being a total helpless victim.

I know what you mean Margaret.... I wish I never had Muffin declawed when she was little because she's pretty helpless against Sparky and she's his favorite "victim". Poor girl...she's always constantly running from him..... Same happens with Peaches (also declawed - certainly not a good thing to do) only he picks on Muffin much more often. Peaches will sometimes try to stand her ground before running.
