Amputation sounds a bit extreem for a dislocated toe. There must be something about the cat's toe that I do not understand if it needed to be removed for a dislocation.
I'm not questioning the vet or you - I'm just trying to learm more.

My vet said that it is difficult to relocate a dislocated toe in cats and they frequently redislocate. Splash's was bent and rotated a full 90 degrees to the side with a small crush fracture on the proximal bone. This would indicate significant ligament damage. The joint would have to have been pinned and fused for a permanent reduction. My vet said cats don't usually do well with pinned toe joints and there is a high complication and failure rate. She said they usually heal much faster and better if the end of the toe is removed.
