Trilly-141-icon_cheers That's great. I think we're got it pretty good because Bandit is to afraid to go outside and we keep our yard trimmed. But then, we haven't had a real winter. So I think that may have something to do with it.

I think Borax is what Fleabusters uses.... In case it's NOT, I've heard that Borax works too. You can find it in the laundry soap aisle at the grocerie store. Never heard of the flea collar inside the vacuum though.... I've always put moth balls in so the room doesn't get that nasty vacuum cleaner- doggy smell. Works great if you don't mind the smell of the moth balls. Vacuum with the windows open for your pets though (to help dissipate the moth ball smell) if you try it.

Mothball fumes are toxic to breath, so don't do that anymore. Mothballs are a dangerous thing to humans and animals. And, of course, to moths. Wink

The flea collar in the vacuum bag is so that the adult fleas vacuumed up will hopefully die before you get to take the vacuum bag out to the trash, or die while they are in the trash outside. It isn't necessary if you take care taking out the used bag.

If using Borax on the rugs to kill fleas, it has to stay a whole day. How it works is that it winds up drying out the flea's bodies. It takes more than 15 minutes to suck all the moisture out of all of them.

I was wondering about the toxicity of mothballs, so thanks for adding that Margaret. Smile

Also, regarding fleabusters and Borax, I asked the fleabusters woman if they use Boric Acid (which is I think the active ingredient in Borax) and she said they use something that is related to boric acid, but not boric acid, that they have patented. Here is what their website says (from :http://www.fleabuster.com/aboutus.html)

"The Rx for Fleas Plus powder is a Sodium-PolyBorate with a neutral PH of 7.0. It acts as a desiccant when any of the microscopic particles of the negatively charged powder come in contact with the larvae, the pupa or the egg. After 2-6 weeks the home is completely free of fleas. Even as pets go outside and bring in new fleas the home will stay protected because the Rx for Fleas Plus powder remains in the carpets and hardwood crevices.

It should be noted that there is a very big difference chemically and with regard to safety between Rx for Fleas Plus and products made of 100% Boric Acid."

Still, I'd think that Boric Acid (Borax) is a lot less toxic than most flea treatments you find in pet stores. But I'd just rather have them use their powder and guarantee it like they do , because I'm tired of fighting fleas! rk01_zanzaramaledetta rk01_zanzaramaledetta rk01_zanzaramaledetta

I don't use the moth balls anymore. I only used them in Florida because we had carpeting throughout the entire house and when I vacuumed, I kept the windows open or the A/C was running and circulating the air and the cats would usually hang out in the Florida room (which was closed off except for a cat door). The smell disipated in less than 5 to 10 minutes.

Basically it's an enclosed "porch" type room that people have on their houses in Florida. Mine was about the same size as my living room (quite large) and it had screens all the way around from ceiling to about knee high and then vynal windows (not a good thing in Florida because the sun really bakes them and they have to keep being replaced every 10 years or so - I had dark gray ones but you can also get "bronze"). I had a window air conditioner in mine but some folks run regular central heat and air through.... it's just a "sitting room" kind of place. The cats loved it out there because they laid on a plastic bin (where I kept the dog food - it was a very large bin) and watched the birds through just the screen. The birds would get within 2 feet of their furry little faces!!!!! (I fed them there so they would come and entertain the cats)

Yah, it was pretty neat. I miss having a room like that. The cats were out there so much you couldn't believe it - even when it was near 100 degrees with very high humidity. Someday we'll enclose our porch (after we make it a wrap around) and the kitty's will be able to play out there...... I wish we could afford to do it now, but we can't.

Ah...a wrap around porch.

I'm looking for a condo to buy and an outdoor space for a kitty enclosure (or at least somewhere I can take them on a harness maybe) is high on my list.

If you get a condo with a balcony somewhere (like a two story with a balcony off the bedroom upstairs kind of place) you can screen in the balcony and sit out there (with no buggies!!!) with your kittys. That would be nice......
